Gueliz is a weathier and more westernised district of Marrakech where most of the major businesses, modern shops, supermarkets, banks, real estate and travel agents are located. Bisected by the main thoroughfare of Mohamed V and with the major crossroads of Place du Novembre and Place de La Liberte a busy, chaotic jumble of honking cars, mopeds, taxis and donkey carts, Gueliz is a real contrast to the narrow alleyways of the Medina.

With wide streets and squares with fountains, a choice of excellent restaurants, night clubs, bars and street cafes, Gueliz is the place to head for alternative night time entertainment once the crowds and acrobats of Djemaa el Fna become too much.

We found that we enjoyed being in the old medina during the day, but the cafes and restaurants in the Gueliz area in the evening are really great. Very nice food at generally good prices.
