Qas’r Kharana’s square construction lends it a strong fortress feel reinforced by the narrow windows. Whilst not on any major trade route the open plan design is similar to khans or caravanserais of the region. There are several dozen rooms here spread around a central courtyard; look for the painted inscription in one of the rooms which mentions the date November 710AD.
