Stand at the brim of Latin America’s largest craters, on the edge of the dormant Pululahua Volcano, just north of the equator. Traditionally considered by the natives of the area to be the Earth’s navel, its huge crater has its own microclimate, is host to over 260 different types of plant, orchid and lush cloud forest. Protected as a geobotanical reserve since 1966, its rich soils are cultivated in colorful patches.
Admiring the view from the crater edge, the scene before you can suddenly disappear from view among the clouds, only to appear a few minutes later – an overwhelming experience!
For the best views and less cloud cover, make sure you visit early in the morning.
