Puerto Egas in James Bay is one of the most visited sites in Galapagos and is named after the founder of a salt mine that was established on the island in the 1920s. The rusty relics of machinery and dilapidated buildings abandoned along with the venture forty years later can still be seen here.

Located on the west coast of Santiago Island, this long black basalt coastline contains hundreds of inlets, channels, tunnels and pools that are a haven for wildlife including Sally Lightfoot crabs, snails, octopus, seals, herons, oyster catchers and marine iguanas.

An excellent location for exploring the rocky shores and snorkelling, there are also two trails. One heads to the old salt mine following the route of the tracks the machinery once used, while the other is a 2 km trail which leads to the top of the extinct Sugar Loaf Volcano at almost 400 metres above sea level. Passing palo santo shrubs, Darwin’s finches, Galapagos hawks and colourful vermillion flycatchers along the way, the views of the surrounding landscape are incredible, particularly as you gaze into the volcanic crater itself, which actually rests below the level of the sea.
