One of the Greek cities of the Menderes (Meander) River valley, Priene has occupied two locations close to each other and at its oldest dates to 1000BCE. Laid out on a grid pattern with all main roads running east to west. The theatre is well preserved – with an alter to Dionysus, and temples dedicated to Zeus and Athena Polias, the latter designed by Pythius who helped build the Mausoleum of Halcarnassus, one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World. It’s spectacular location and lack of visitors make Priene well-worth a visit as you head south from Ephesus towards Bodrum.
