The twin islands of Plazas are located off the east coast of Santa Cruz Island. Access to North Plaza is restricted to research, but South Plaza is open to visitors. Created by geological uplift, the islands tilt dramatically upwards towards some impressive cliffs on the south coast that offer impressive views and are home to a wide variety of seabirds including red-billed tropicbirds, Audubon shearwaters, brown pelicans, frigates, swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed and masked boobies.

Home to large populations of macho sea lions, a fascinating range of marine and land iguanas (including a rare hybrid between the two subspecies), lava cactus and endemic Sesuvian plants, the trail here is a popular day trip from Puerto Ayora and stopping point for Galapagos cruises.

Snorkelling also allows the opportunity to see turtles, white-tipped sharks, yellow mullets, rays and occasionally dolphins.
