Known as the “Gallery of Maya Art”, Ceibal covers an area about 1½ km2 and consists of three large architectural complexes containing many restored temples, plazas and intricately carved stelae, which are some of the best preserved from the Late Classic period.
One of the most beautiful and best preserved stelae of the Post-classic period can be found here along with ceramic vessels and anthropomorphic pottery figurines which are of a very high quality.
The first settlements at Ceibal date back as far as 800 BC, but the city was at its peak from 700 to 900 A.D., a time when most Classic sites were going through a process of collapse. This prosperity was thought to be due to outside influences, mainly the arrival of intruders called Putuns from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico or the Yucatan. Some of the monuments and buildings clearly reflect these influences.
