Ecuador lays claim to being the origin of the famous Panama Hat – known locally as sombreros de paja toquilla. 

Traditionally made in Ecuador from the fibre of a plant of the ciclantacea family, called carludovica palmata, it is possible to visit one of the best workshops in the country in Cuenca and watch the process involved in making the finest hats.

Having seen the techniques of dyeing, washing, ironing, shaping, most visitors decide to buy their own from the great selection available – ideal if your'e moving on to the Galapagos Islands!
