Monterrico is arguably the best of the Guatemala beaches, and is the ideal place to relax after a visit to the cities and the highlands. The black sandy beach is quite wide and extends for some miles therefore perfect for long walks; there are also some big waves although it is not known to be a surfing destination. 

Other activities which can be enjoyed at Monterrico include a boat trip through the swamps to look for native wildlife and to visit the animal sanctuary, horse riding on the beach, whale-watching, taking to the water in a kayak or joining the bird or turtle watching tours. The Biotopo Monterrico-Hawaii nature reserve has a turtle release programme and it’s a delight to see the baby turtles make their way towards the ocean.
