The famous souq here at Nizwa has a 1990’s façade and yet inside remains what is a traditional Middle Eastern bazaar filled with the smells of aromatic spices and where you can buy antiques, copper (for which it is famous), curved khanjars, pottery, textiles and silver jewellery. This is a great place for a little haggling and – with patience – where some great souvenirs can be bought.
The Friday morning livestock market is an altogether different proposition; here goats, cows and sheep are traded with the animals being lead around in circles whilst the owners hope for the best possible price. This is the place to experience Omani culture and is very photogenic but an early start is needed as the sale kicks off by 08:00hrs.
