The town of Nicoya, the cultural centre of the province of Guanacaste, was Costa Rica's first colonial city. The Parroquia San Blas Church was founded in 1644 and is the oldest church in the country; it now houses a small museum with religious artefacts.

In front of the church is the pleasant and well tended park. Shaded by huge trees, it is a favourite place for meeting and relaxing in the centre of the town.
