With Rustaq, Nakhl Fort is a principal attraction of the Batinah Coast. The current 350 year old fort was built to protect trade routes from Nizwa to the coast and was constructed on the foundations of much older defensive structures that date back many hundreds of years. Records show it has been restored 3 times: once in the 3rd century again in the 10th and latterly under the auspices of the present Sultan in 1990.
It is an impressive piece of military architecture, its 6 towers and crenulated walls all following the rock on which it was built. Inside the views over the oasis are impressive whilst the rooms within the fort are furnished with examples of local crafts, textiles and weaponry.
Close by are the famous Al A’Thawara hot springs, around 4km from the fort. This is a popular and very pleasant picnic spot after a look around the fort. The waters are said to have curative properties. Nakhl is well worth a special visit.
