Located east of old Muscat, Muttrah is overlooked like its near neighbour by a fort perched atop a hill. The Corniche runs around the bay with the famous fish market at one end and the souq at the other. Until the 1970s the gates of the city were locked shut, just as they had been in centuries past. Muttrah perhaps more than anywhere has an Arabian Nights feel about it. The souq is interesting if not as atmospheric as those in Aleppo or Cairo but the setting, with the mountains behind and dhows in the harbour, is sublime, adding something intangible which those other two great souqs lack and which makes a visit an absolute must.
