The oldest and largest mosque in Cairo built in the 9th century is the Mosque of Ibn Tulun. Originally designed by a Syrian Christian the original features of the mosque remain; later additions include an unusual spiral staircase on the exterior of what was then a new minaret. The wooden beams are said to have come from Mt Ararat in Turkey and are said to have been part of Noah’s Ark. The large 92sq metre courtyard is balanced by the overall size of the surrounding buildings, and despite their size neither one nor the other dominates. Note the 2km long kufic script around the mosque; it is inscribed rather than being a plaster and it is said to contain around 20% of the whole of the koran’s text.
