Miletus was over the years home to several great historical scholars such as Thales, Anaximenes and Hippodamus, It is an ancient city, believed to be the oldest of the Ionian League and was always a great trading centre. Laid out like Priene on Hippodamus’ grid pattern it’s inhabitants spread far and wide, throughout the Mediterranean and along the Black Sea coast. As with other cities in the region the great Menderes River silted up its port and heralded its demise. Today the site’s most impressive feature is it’s 15000 seat theatre – a must-visit for anyone travelling south from Ephesus towards Bodrum.
