Meidum Pyramid is generally regarded as Egypt’s first true pyramid. Located on the west bank of the Nile it lies some 102km south of Cairo and this relative isolation ensures it is generally a quiet and peaceful site. Meidum is often referred to as the collapsed pyramid which marks the transition from the Early Dynastic Period to the Old Kingdom, some 2,600 years BCE. Today the inner core, is all that remains, the outer coating having slid off as a result of a design flaw. For those interested in the evolution of pyramid tombs and Pharaonic history Meidum and its associated necropolis is a must.
