Soon after the fall of Khartoum in 1885 the Mahdi died. A beautiful tomb was built in his honour with a glittering silver dome and Sudanese started making a pilgrimage to visit the tomb. The tomb was destroyed by the British after their conquest of Sudan. The tomb was rebuilt in 1947 as a copy of the original.
