The Magnetic South Pole is the point on Earth where the southern compass needle leads. Rather confusingly, this is far from the other South Poles and moves approximately 13 kilometres each year. The Magnetic South Pole was first reached in 1909 by Mawson, Edgeworth and Mackay when it was on the Antarctic land mass. Its current location is now beneath the ocean at 65° South, 139° East.
