In the valley below Machu Picchu, next to the swirling Urubamba River, sits the small town of Aguas Calientes. It is to here that the train (and helicopter) from Cusco and Ollantaytambo brings the day trippers to visit the Sanctuary above before taking them away again later that afternoon. Regular buses ferry tourists along the hairpin slopes to the ruins above, and during the day the market is a hive of activity and negotiation as locals sell their crafts and visitors stock up on gifts to take back home.

Everyone who visits Machu Picchu passes through Aguas Calientes, and it is the base for the hotels, restaurants and bars that cater for visitors. Several walks can be organised from here, the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel has an excellent Orchid Trail through their hummingbird filled land, and if you are arriving after completing the Inca Trail itself, head up the hill and unwind in the hot springs that give Aguas Calientes its name.
