Boldly standing over the remains of the Inca citadel, as recognisable as the sanctuary itself, is the distinctive peak of Huayna Picchu, meaning ‘young peak’ in Quechua.
A steep, narrow route leads directly from Machu Picchu’s main square, and it is possible to follow the Inca pathway to the top, where there are sacred buildings and terraces literally clinging to the slopes.
The view from the top of Huayna Picchu is simply unforgettable – the surrounding mountains, the canyon formed by the Vilcanota River and a very different perspective of Machu Picchu – but vertigo suffers beware.
It is a steep one hour hike to the top, but to get there before the crowds is truly unforgettable.
TEMPLE OF THE MOON
For the truly energetic, it is possible to reach the Temple of the Moon which is located on the lower slopes of Huayna Picchu. A 2-3 hour walk will bring you to this fascinating temple, where the three planes of Incan religion are said to be depicted: the Hanan Pacha (the heavens), the Kay Pacha (Earth, or physical life), and the Ukju Pacha (the underworld) represented by the condor, the puma, and the snake.
