Work on the Duomo or Cathedral of St Martin was begun by Bishop Anselm (later Pope Alexander II) in 1063 but only the apse with its tall columnar arcades and the fine campanile bell tower remain.
The 14th century saw the rebuilding of the nave and transepts in a Gothic style in the 14th century, while the west front was begun in 1204 by Guidetto; these consist of a huge portico of 3 magnificent arches and, above them, galleries enriched with sculpture.
The nave contains and octagonal shrine inside which is the Volto Santo di Lucca or Sacred Countenance, a cedar crucifix and image of Christ, said to have been carved by the hand of Nicodemus.
