Wat Wisunarat dates from the reign of King Wisunarat, 1513 and represents the earliest style of Lao temple architectural style it is Luang Prabang’s oldest operating temple. The tiered roofs of this style add elegance and grace to the temples they adorn and Wat Wisunarat is no different. The sacred Prabang image of the Buddha now in the Royal Museum was housed here from 1513 until it was taken to Vientiane in 1707.
The existing structure replaced that destroyed or damaged in 1887 by the Chinese Haw Black Flags invaders and is executed in a similar style; today it is a museum of religious art with numerous centuries-old Buddha images and other religious objects.
