Newly discovered by travellers, Choquequirao is often referred to as the ‘New Machu Picchu’ and with access only possible by a 2-day trek through the mountains it provides a challenging alternative to the traditional Inca Trail.

Located at 3010 metres, approximately 40% of the archaeological site has been cleared of vegetation. Aside from the impressive setting, overlooking valleys, mountains and rivers, intrepid visitors can see the remains of a 15th Century fortress which the Spanish never managed to defeat. It is thought that Choquequirao is likely to have been a check point for the Vilcabamba region, as well as an administrative centre.
