The Lenca are the indigenous people who populate western Honduras today and did during the time when the Maya peacefully ruled over some of them in not-too-distant Copan.
On the shores of Lake Yojoa, just outside the extensive reach of the Maya, the Lenca have left their own remains, free of Mayan influence. The ruins of their settlement, one that was occupied from roughly 700B.c. up to the arrival of the Spanish is now considered Honduras's second most important archaeological site and is protected as the Los Naranjos Archaeological Park, named after a local village.
