A short distance north of Ica, off the coast from the Paracus National Reserve, are a small collection of rocky islands, known the Ballestas Islands.
Sometimes referred to as the ‘poor man’s Galapagos’, the Ballestas islands are home to a wide variety of birds and sea mammals, which feed upon the rich coastal waters in this part of Peru. Indeed, the islands as so heavily populated by birds that at one time one of the most important industries of the areas was the collection of guano for export as fertiliser.
A trip to the Ballestas islands also allows the best views of one of the most fascinating archaeological features of the Paracas National Reserve: The El Candelabra geoglyph that is over 120 meters in length.
The Ballestas Islands can only be reached by boat, and best seen in the morning when the water is calmest.
