Only got time to do one thing in Hanoi – make it a walk through the Old Quarter.

Laid out north of Hoan Kiem Lake its streets bear the names of the goods manufactured on them; buildings have a front room where goods were once manufactured, followed by a small open courtyard to let in light, and a back room which is used as living quarters.

These narrow sometimes maze-like streets are always vibrant – by dawn people are up and about and not long after vendors arrive and some shops open. The buildings (often referred to as tunnel houses as they are so long and narrow) are often in a dilapidated state, their ornate, painted facades crumbling and, somehow, only adding to the charm.

Walk Ladder, Silver, Paper and Silk Streets – the area is known as the 36 Streets – visit Huyen Thien Pagoda and enjoy the areas great restaurants. You’ll come back again and again.
