This small and intimate Centro de Crianza de Tortugas Gigantes (Giant Turtle Breeding Centre) is a short twenty minute walk from Puerto Villamil.

With a small interesting interpretation centre, corrals for adult turtles and a hatchery for the infants, the centre works to protect and increase the population of the island’s five subspecies of these giant creatures.

Whilst the aim is always to release the turtles back into their natural habitat, on occasion it has been used as a rescue centre for individuals who have been threatened by volcanic eruptions and forest fires.
