Fort Qaitbey is said to stand on the site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was possibly built using stone from it. Built in the 15th century by the Mameluke Sultan Qaitbey it has recently been restored and is once again one of the city’s famous landmarks. Approach is made over a causeway to what is the original gatehouse, flanked by two round towers: today visitors enter to the east. Inside is a courtyard with the north wall having cannon positions. There are great views from the fort over the harbour and a visit is definitely recommended.
