Close to the modern beach resort of Altinkum lies the temple ‘city’ of Didyma. On the southern frontiers of Ionia Didyma was less a city and more a vast temple complex whose priests who watched over the famous oracle. People from far and wide travelled to question the oracle and left valuable gifts in return, the source of the temples wealth. Its end came in 479BCE when the Persian warrior Xerxes destroyed the sanctuary, even though later settlers tried to rebuild the temple, never finishing the task. Still their efforts are impressive – the structure is huge, with a forest of pillars reminiscent of the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak. The famous head of Medusa – much photographed – once stood high up on an architrave.
