The sunken caldera of Deception Island is a gray and eerie place. Sailing through the narrow entrance, named Neptune’s Bellows the waters within provide a natural harbour.

This is the site of an old whaling station, and as if to remind us of this island’s tough past, a few weathered huts, giant storage tankers and assorted pieces of machinery remain.

It is possible to climb up the slopes (Mount Pond at 539m is the highest point) to appreciate the wonderful views below, and here there may be a chance for a quick dip in the sea (around 2˚C) from the black sandy beach at Whalers’ Bay followed by a longer wallow in the hot volcanic springs.
