From a small beginning in 1981 the Darwin Crocodile Farm is now home to some 35,000 crocodiles. The crocodiles range in size from hatchlings just a few centimetres long to large males over five metres in length. The farm is very well laid out with gardens and plenty of shade from which to safely observe the crocodiles feeding. The saltwater crocodiles on display in the tourist park also play an important role in the farm's breeding and raising programs. Many native birds and animals also call the farm home and bird enthusiasts can quickly add to their diaries numerous species such as kingfishers, ibis, sandpipers, storks and birds of prey as they go about their daily business. Water monitors, turtles and many other lizard species are regularly spotted in the gardens.
