Suwayda sits some 90 kilometres south-east of Damascus at 11m above sea level. It is well-known for vineyards which grown from the rich volcanic soil; in history the town was known as Suwada, “little black town”, a reference to the basalt.

There are numerous remains of ancient civilizations in the area and some of the most notable of these, along with a collection of exquisite mosaics discovered in 1962, are now housed in the Suwayda Museum. Notable are mosaics that represent Artemis, goddess of chastity and hunting, surrounded by her nymphs when she is surprised by a hunter while bathing, and another which portrays the birth of Venus and the wedding of Thetis.

Statues carved in the black volcanic basalt show signs of a mixture of Nabataean, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Arab influences. Finally there is also the ruins of a 3rd century Roman temple surrounded Corinthian columns.
