Damascus’s most-famous souk and the artery from the new town into the old the Hamadiyeh Souk still retains many traditional elements. Running for around 500 meters from east to west it ends beneath a Roman archway right in front of the Ummayed Mosque.
The souk’s high vaulted roof is today covered in pieced corrugated metal through which lights streams. The present souk was last rebuilt in the 13th century and it stands on the site of an ancient Roman fortress, some remains of which can still be seen as you wander.
