The 9 islands that make up the reserve are uninhabited and stretch in a chain running east to west for some 20km off the Batinah Coast. The islands and surrounding coral reefs were designated a Nature Reserve by Oman in 1996 and permission – easily obtained – is required to visit them. The north side has deeper waters (20-30m) and is most suited to diving, whilst the shallow waters off the south side are outstanding for snorkellers. Turtles nest on the islands’ beaches.
In addition to the coral gardens and abundant marine life the islands are a draw for birdwatchers with ospreys, bridled and white-cheeked terns and western reef herons along with migratory species to be found.
The islands are best visited by making arrangements through the Al Sawadi Beach Resort which lies on the coast between Barkha and Musahnah.
