Perched on the hillside overlooking Cusco, the mighty ruins of Sacayhuaman are firmly on the Cusco must-see list. Debate continues to whether this was built as a religious or military settlement, but it is certainly the site of one of the most ferocious of all battles between the Inca and the Spanish, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Inca Empire.

All but the largest stones were removed by the Spanish to build their new Colonial city in the valley below, but the size, number and extent of those that remain offer a taste of just how impressive this ancient site must have been. Carved rocks, many weighing between 90 and 120 tons, fit together perfectly, forming an impenetrable base of this ancient complex .

Sacsayhuaman is the setting for Cusco’s most important festival, Inti Raymi – the Festival of the Sun – which takes place on 24 June each year.

The ruins of Sacsayhuaman are located 2 km on hillside above Cusco, 30-40 minute walk or 10 minutes by taxi.
