Scattered amongst the countryside overlooking Cusco are several other archaeological sites worth seeing. These include:
Quenqo
Just 3 km away from Cusco, Quenqo is believed to have been a place of worship. Built on an outcrop of limestone rocks, with underground galleries and a semicircular amphitheatre, some believe that the flat stone may once have been used for sacrificial rites.
Puca Pucara
Archaeologists believe that Puca Pucara, meaning ‘Red Fortress’ was a military construction forming part of the defence for the city of Cusco. Just 6 km away from Cusco, visitors can see good example of imposing Ica walls and terraces, as well as take in the panoramic views from the site.
Tambomachay
Also known as the Inca Baths, Tambomachay is just 7 km from Cusco and is believed to have been a place to worship. Aqueducts, channels and small cascades on the rocks that carry water from a nearby spring, and local folklore has it that those who drink the water will, one day, return ...
