During the Inca Empire, the Plaza was known as Huacaypata, a Quechua word meaning ‘Place of Tears’, and was both an important meeting place and ceremonial centre covering at least twice the area than it does today. Here, Franciso Pizarro proclaimed the conquest of Cusco, and soon the Spanish brought their own influences, imposing an awe-inspiring heart to one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Stone arches, wooden balconies and ornate places of worship surround the square, which is today a lively gathering place for both locals and travellers.
