The Koricancha, or Temple of the Sun, is central to Inca folklore and is believed to have been one of the most impressive buildings of the Inca World. History tells that when the Spanish arrived the building was literally covered in gold and inside there were rooms filled with untold riches. Sadly, these legendary treasures and precious stones – including a large golden disk, said to represent the sun – were soon looted by the conquistadores, and it is said it took several months to melt it all down.
Today the ancient Inca walls form a solid foundation for the Dominican Convent that the Spanish built here, displaying a unique fusion of Inca and Colonial architecture. This classic Inca stonework is an excellent example of enormous carved rocks slotting together perfectly in the construction of an architectural marvel. The convent possesses an art gallery of valuable seventeenth and eighteenth century canvasses.
