Overlooking the Plaza de Armas, Cusco’s seventeenth-century Cathedral is built in a beautifully ornate baroque style. Built in several stages, the current buiding sits upon the site of the Inca Suntar Wasi (House of God) and Palace of Inca Wiracocha.

The interior is rich in cedar and alder woodcarvings and holds an important collection of paintings from the Cusco School of Art and silverwork. Worth noting in particular are the choir and the pulpit, as well as the local interpretation of the Last Supper, which is includes the local delicacy of cuy and chica, that’s guinea pig served with a local drink made from fermented maize.

Guides are available for a small fee plus tip, but you may prefer to arrange a more complete city tour through your Travel Expert.
