Sometimes bypassed by those looking to hit the beach immediately, Coxen Hole, where ferries and flights arrive, is capital of the Bay Island region and perhaps a good place to get a feel for the Garifuna culture of those who inhabit the island and the Caribbean coast. It is also an excellent place to stock up on souvenirs for those back home.
The settlement is named after a pirate captain, John Coxen, who lived on Roatan from 1687 to 1697.
