Created to protect the Quetzal, the national bird and symbol of Guatemala, the El Biotopo de Quetzal reserve offers amazing hiking trails through the cloud forest on mountains that reach 2,300 meters above sea. The rich vegetation combines wide-leaf and pine trees with an abundance of orchids, moss, ferns and bromeliads. Orchids flourish in this region and over 650 different species can be found. Your best chance of spotting the Quetzal, a beautiful green bird with a long elegant single green tail feather, is in the early morning hours.
