The largest town between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son on road no 1095 Pai has developed over the past few years into a principle stop on the northern traveller circuit. Visitors from a few years ago won’t recognise the sleepy tribal town it was as hotels, guesthouses and restaurants have all moved in, and yet it retains a pleasant atmosphere, perhaps as a result of the art crowd that have made the place their own: comparisons with Ubud in Bali are not totally inaccurate. Come here for hot springs, good food, good music as well as trekking and elephant riding.
