The Charles Darwin Research Centre was established in 1961 and aims to research, educate and preserve the flora and fauna unique to Galapagos.

Located just 15 minutes walk away from Puerto Ayora on the Isla Santa Cruz, it is also home to the most famous inhabitant of the Galapagos Islands, Lonesome George, the last surviving tortoise of the subspecies from Pinta Island.

Visitors to the Charles Darwin Research Centre enjoy a walk along a nature trail before visiting the Van Straelen Visitor's Centre, which explains more about the centre’s work. With a team of over two hundred scientists, researchers, volunteers and students, there is a lot going on here, but the best known is the turtle breeding program where visitors can see young hatchlings and their older giant tortoise siblings being nurtured until they are old enough to survive alone in the wild.
