The original temple here was built around the 4th century and the current double-roofed structure is said to be the oldest in the Kathmandu Valley. The temple is dedicated to Narayan, an incarnation of Vishnu and has some of the best carvings dating from the early Lichhavai period in existence; the finely carved and painted roof struts have images of the ten incarnations of Vishnu and various goddesses. Other notables include life size 5th century Garuda, Vishnu vehicle, a statue of the kneeling King Bhupatindra Malla and his queen and a 6th century stone statue of Vishnu Viswarup. Nearby and within the same complex stands the Lakshmi Narayan Temple where an 8th century statue of the six-armed Trivikratha stands next to a statue of Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Vishnu. Fine views can be had from the temple which has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Note that non-Hindus cannot enter the temple itself.
