The Ceremonial South Pole is located in a permanent position on the drifting ice and hence its position changes slightly each year.

A short distance from the Geographical South Pole, the Ceremonial Pole is a place for the South Pole and Research Station photos. Here a metallic globe rests on a plinth held up by a red and white pole. This is surrounded by the twelve flags of the original Antarctic Treaty signatories.
