Caunos was founded in the 9th century BCE and lies on what was at that time the border of the Carian and Lycian states. It sits on a hill to the south of Dalyan and a visit is a must for anyone visiting the town as there are Lycian-style tombs, a theatre, a temple dedicated to Apollo, agora and nymphaeum to see.
