The volcanic island of Ischia lies of the coast of Naples in the northern end of the Bay of Naples. Easily reached by ferry and hydrofoil it’s a popular beach destination which also boasts natural thermal springs. The Castello Aragonese at Ischia Ponte is the island's principle and most obvious point of history and the gardens of La Mortella, created by the composer William Walton and his wife Susanna, are another worthwhile attraction.
Archaeological finds from the island’s ancient past are displayed in the museum at Lacco Ameno, the Museo Archeologico Pithecusae, and it is here that you can see the famous 'Nestor's Cup'.
For an educational and fun activity visit some of the fumaroles (steaming geysers) and natural hot springs - among those worth seeing are the fumarole on the Maronti beach, towards Sant'Angelo.
