On the northern shores of Santa Cruz, is the fascinating Caleta Tortuga Negra. A region of wetlands, three species of mangrove grow stretching from the shores to over a kilometre inland. Motor engines are prohibited here, so most trips gently paddle through the labyrinth of roots and branches that stand over the calm clear waters below.
Here, visitors can often see diamond-shaped schools of spotted eagle rays and mustard rays, white-tipped reef sharks and green sea turtles. Lava herons, yellow warblers, egret and pelicans are also often spotted in this peaceful cove.
