Sitting just below the Sivapuri Hills lies the amazing image of Budhanilakantha, ‘Lord blue throat’ after a legend that Vishnu drank poison, related in the Samudra Manthan epic. Here an image of Vishnu lies back on the coiling 11-hooded serpent, Ananta. Said to be sculpted from a one single block stone the image sits in the centre of a small pool of water – a representation of the cosmic ocean – and appears to float. Over 1,000 years old the 5m (17 ft) long image has his legs crossed and his four hands holds his four symbols: the disc, club, conch-shell and lotus flower.
