Bodrum Castle or to give it its proper name the Castle of St Peter stands in the centre of town on the peninsula overlooking the twin bays. Its history is bound up with Tamerlane and the Crusader Knights Hospitaller who, based in nearby Rhodes, built the castle to repel him in the 15th century. Today it is well worth a visit not as it houses the superb Museum of Underwater Archaeology housing exhibits from finds from all over Turkey’s coast, within its walls. There are dungeons and towers to explore within which are interesting exhibits – see the huge collection of amphorae, an ancient Roman ship, enter the Snake Tower to see more amphorae, Crusader graffiti in the English Tower and the remains of a Carian princess in the French Tower.
